Staying Calm in Chaotic Times!
As I sit here after my morning meditation I find myself wondering what everyone is doing to stay calm and keep their focus during this very difficult time?
Do you read and watch everything because you want to stay informed, only to find yourself not sleeping and full of anxiety?
Do you ignore everything that is happening because you just don't want to know?
As I contemplate my own behavior, I am reminded of the teachings from the yoga sutra's that relates to this question.
Brahmacharya is one of the Yama's from the Eight Limbs of Yoga which translates as using your energy wisely and with intention; avoiding excess or overindulgence.
Avidya, also one of the Yama's which translates to looking away, not knowing, or ignorance.
If I'm over indulging in excess news and information I'm practicing brahmacharya. If I'm looking away, and ignoring what's happening then I'm then practicing Avidya.
So what can we do?

As Yoga and Ayurveda teaches us, life is a balance. We need to find a balance to stay healthy in body and mind with the information we take in, the quiet we create in our own home, our daily practices, the foods we eat, etc.
As I contemplate living in the world with all the chaos I am reminded of Ahimsa which translates as non harming and right living.
So the question is what's best? Each of us are individuals and need to create our own path to right living.
One thing I know to be helpful is meditation. It helps create stillness in the mind, and are less reactive, less irritated, and have better sleep. You'll find you have more calm amongst the chaos!
There are many choices you can do to help you get started. Join a meditation group, find an app, sit in nature, create silence in your life like when you're driving don't turn the radio on or when you're at home don't listen to a podcast.
One thing is for sure, creating quiet and space helps our nervous system to regulate which keeps our body / mind in balance and harmony.
